Stokley Carmichael

On June 29, 1941, Stokley Carmichael was born in Port of Spain. He later moved to New York at the age of 11. Stokley is well known for his role as a civil rights activist. He was chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and served in the national Black Panther Party as an Honorary Prime Minister. He popularized the term "Black Power." J. Edgar Hoover identified him as the man most likely to succeed Malcolm X. The FBI personally targeted him, resulting in Stokley moving to Ghana and reestablishing himself under the name of Kwame Ture.
