DISCUSSION PROMPTS / DEC. 8
Chapter Nine:
Do you agree with hooks’ assessment that fear of reciprocation prevents us from knowing love?
“On this planet nobody really has the opportunity to know love since it is power and not love that is the order of the day.”
Is the order of the day still power? If so, how do we begin to make love the order of the day?
When we face pain in relationships, is the most common response to sever bonds rather than maintain commitment?
“Deep commitment does not guarantee the success of the relationship but does help more than any other factor to ensure it [...]” (pg 159).
“Living in a culture where we are encouraged to seek a quick release from any pain or discomfort has fostered a nation of individuals who are easily devastated by emotional pain” (pg 159).
Chapter Ten:
How do you feel about hooks’ definition of romantic love as the space one goes“… to get the love we always wanted but never had, to have the love we want but are not prepared to give” (169)?
Do you agree that “Our patterns around romantic love are unlikely to change if we do not change our language?”
How often do you see these themes of “ heart connections”, “soul connections” or “true love” depicted in movies, tv shows, Netflix series etc.?
Chapter Eleven:
hooks sees mourning and grief as an expression of the commitment made to love in life. Do you agree that allowing grief to run its course shows a continued commitment to allowing love to be transformative and change us?
After reading this chapter, If Death needed a friend, would you be Death’s friend?
“Death is among us” Let’s discuss.
“Our first home in the womb is also a grave where we await the coming of life. Our first experience of living is a moment of resurrection, a movement out of the shadows and into the light” (pg 199).
