DISCUSSION PROMPTS / DEC. 15
Chapter Twelve:
Do you agree with James Baldwin in The Fire Next Time where he “writes about suffering in the healing process, stating;
"I do not mean to be sentimental about suffering- but people who cannot suffer can never grow up, can never discover who they are." ?
Why do we fear love?
Are we more afraid of surrendering ourselves to love or of living without love?
Is it possible to be too damaged/wounded to love?
How does your community currently incorporate the practice of healing in their social norms and traditions?
Chapter Thirteen:
Do you agree with the following statement by hooks:
“Many of us believe our difficulties will end when we find a soul mate. Love does not lead to an end to difficulties, it provides us with the means to cope with our difficulties in ways that enhance our growth.”
In appealing to the story of Jacob, hooks advocates for embracing wounds as blessings, even while acknowledging that we may not hold any fault for acquiring the hurt. How does this practice of accountability inform how we approach healing the hurt from wounds (stemming from family trauma to white supremacy)?
