On July 13, 1868, Oscar James Dunn became formally installed as the lieutenant governor of Louisiana. To this date, this is the highest elected officer held to date by an African American. Oscar was born a slave to his freed father and his enslaved mother. His father worked to buy his and his siblings' freedom when Oscar was 7 years old. He held the position of lieutenant governor for 3 years from 1868-1871.
