Shirley Chisholm

On November 30, 1924, Shirley Chisholm was born in Brooklyn, NY. She was born to immigrant parents of Guyanese and Bajan descent. Ms. Chisholm was the first African American woman elected to the U.S. Congress. In the 1972 presidential election, she also became the first African American candidate to run for a major party's nomination, and became the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.
