December 29th, Ujamaa, also known as the fourth day of Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa is an annual African-American and Pan-African holiday celebrated from December 26th-January 1st. Kwanzaa derives from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which means first fruits of the harvest. Kwanzaa is celebrated with seven principles: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), Imani (Faith). The fourth day of Kwanzaa, Ujamaa, is dedicated to building and maintaining profitable black-owned businesses.
