Should Pregnant and Nursing Mothers Use Cannabis?

That’s the question OB/GYN’s have been faced with lately since legalization has happened in 19 states thus far.
With that comes more pregnant and nursing women using cannabis, however, there seems to be a lack of data on whether it’s safe or not.
Although some research has shown that no harmful effects have occurred with pregnant and nursing women testing positive for THC, medical professionals are still advising women to not use cannabis at all while trying to get pregnant, while they are pregnant, and during the nursing stage.
Studies have shown that THC stays in the mother’s body and in her breast milk for at least 8 days or longer and can be passed to the baby.
However, the fact that there’s still a tremendous lack of research on cannabis and what the long-term effects are on children, it’s difficult for medical professionals to assess.
Truthfully, just like with alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, or any sort of substance, it’s always best to err on the side of caution and to not use cannabis while pregnant or nursing.
It’s great to be an advocate for the plant and all of its potential, but with that also comes logic and reason. It’s best to think twice about using cannabis when trying to bring a healthy human being into this world especially since there is such a lack of research on the possible long-term effects on the child.
