Safehouse is Going Straight for Biden!

Reposted with permission from  @SHALWETOKE

Safehouse is a nonprofit organization that has safe consumption sites which provide:

  • overdose prevention services,

  • can reverse overdoses, and

  • its where people can use illegal drugs in a medically supervised setting

The American Medical Association has stated that studies from other countries where safe consumption sites are operating have shown that these sites (1) reduce overdose deaths, (2) reduce transmission rates of infectious diseases and (3) it increases the number of people who are seeking treatment for their addictions without there being an increase in drug trafficking or crimes wherever these sites are located.

There are more than 120 supervised consumption sites operating in Canada, Australia, and Europe, with Switzerland opening their first government authorized consumption site more than 30 years ago. Currently, however, there are nosuch programs in the United States.

However, that might change if Biden changes his stance on harm reduction. He hasn’t had the best track record when it comes to drug policy so this could be his chance to redeem himself, especially since there are now talks about having him impeached.

So what exactly is going on with Safehouse and Biden?

Well, Safehouse just filed a petition this past Thursday with the US Supreme Court. They are asking for the court’s opinion on safe consumption sites to prevent overdose deaths and whether allowing people to take it under medical supervision would violate federal law aka the crack house statute that was created in the 1980s at the height of the drug era.

Back in January, a Philadelphia based US Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit ruled that despite Safehouses goal of preventing overdose deaths, this site would violate the crack house statute which bans ANYONE from operating from a facility for the purpose of unlawfully using controlled substances. The issue we will discuss later more in detail is the “anyone” part.

Biden was a Senator at the time of this crack house statute passing and helped push damageable drug policies that communities are still suffering from, which makes things even stickier for him.

Also, although he hasn’t weighed in directly, The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy said that promoting harm-reduction efforts is a 1st year priority.

The office said it intends to:

  • Expand access to evidence-based treatment

  • Enhance evidence-based harm reduction efforts and

  • Promote access to recovery support services

Now back to the part where I emphasized the word “anyone”. Was the statute intending to ban ANYONE from operating such facilities?

Well, what Safehouse is specifically asking the court to do is to grant the review so that they can determine whether the crack house statute really was intending to prohibit non-commercial, nonprofit social service agencies from creating an overdose prevention site with medically supervised consumption.

Would these consumption sites classify as anyone? Or should these agencies be granted an exemption?

Because if you think about it, if the statute was NOT intending for that purpose, then there really shouldn’t be a reason why the Supremes won’t grant the review and at least be open to overturning the lower court’s ruling.

Biden and his administration could make a huge impact on how this goes. He has made small moves lately such as declaring this week the “Overdose Awareness Week”, but believe me most of us are already aware, bro. we need you Biden to be more aware of your slow to none actions and what they are doing to people and their lives.

Yes, Joe, it’s finally time to redeem yourself.
