Gradual Abolition Act

Pennsylvania became the first state to abolish slavery on March 1, 1780 with the Gradual Abolition Act. The Act prohibited further importation of enslaved people in the state and established that all children later born into Pennsylvania were declared free people regardless of their race or the condition of their parents.
