On April 06, 1909, Matthew Henson became not only the first black person, but the first explorer (alongside his team) to reach the North Pole. A descendant of slaves, born in Charles County, Maryland, Matthew took the credit for being the first at the North Pole. "We went back then and I could see my footprints were the first at the spot."
