Maggie L. Walker

On April 27, 1903, Maggie L. Walker became the first African American woman to charter and become president of a bank, St. Luke Penny Savings Bank, in the United States. Maggie was a teacher and a businesswoman born and raised in Richmond, VA. She left her teaching position in 1886 to then publish a newspaper, The St. Luke Herald, and later chartering the bank. Her restored and furnished home has been named as a National Historic Site in Richmond, Virginia.
