On this day, in 1897, Black inventor Lloyd Ray patented an improved version of the dustpan. Lloyd Ray created a dustpan with a long handle that connected to the dustpan. This handle allowed people to sweep dirt into the dustpan without getting their hands dirty. Ray's patent for the dustpan was only the 165th patent to be issued in the United States.
