On October 5, 1995, former Congresswoman Barbara Jordan received the Sylvanus Thayer Award. The Sylvanus Thayer Award is an honor given by the United States Military Academy at West Point to people who exemplify the motto of West Point. Congresswoman Barbara Jordan was born and raised in Houston, Texas on February 21, 1936. She received a Bachelor's degree at Texas Southern and attended law school at Boston University. She became the first African American woman to serve as a pro tempore of the state senate of Texas.
