On December 14, 1939, Ernie Davis was born in New Salem-Buffington, Pennsylvania. Davis played football for Syracuse University as a halfback. He was the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy. He entered the NFL draft in 1961 for the 1962 NFL season. He was selected in the first round draft by the Washington Football Team, formerly known as the Washington Redskins. He was immediately traded to the Cleveland Browns as the owner of the Redskins was a racist, and Davis refused to play for him. The summer of 1962, Davis was diagnosed with leukemia and later died in 1963, at the age 23.
