Debi Thomas

On February 08, 2022, figure skater Debi Thomas became the first African American woman to win the Women's Singles of the U.S. National Figure Skating Competition. Thomas also accomplished this title while studying at Stanford University as a pre-med student. Thomas was born in New York but grew up in San Jose, California. She began skating at the age of 5 and competed in her first competition at the age of 9. Thomas went on to win three World Championship titles in 1988, 1989, and 1991 and a bronze Medal in the Winter Olympics of 1987.
