Reuben V. Anderson

On January 11, 1985, Reuben V. Anderson was appointed to sit on the Mississippi Supreme Court. He became the first African American named to the court. Anderon was born in Jackson, MS in 1943. He attended Tougaloo University and later attended the University of Mississippi Law School of which he was the second black admitted. However, he was the first African American to graduate from the Law School in 1967. He began working with the NAACP Legal Defense Funds and later went on to practice at a private law firm. It was in 1976 that Anderson began his career appointed as a judge of the Municipal Court for the city of Jackson, MS. In 1985, the governor appointed him to State Supreme Court.
