Patricia Roberts Harris

On December 21, 1976, Patricia Roberts Harris was selected to serve as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development by President Carter. Harris was born in Mattoon, Illinois. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Howard University and later received her JD from George Washington University National Law Center. She was the first African American woman named as an American envoy aka diplomat. Harris also served as the first African America dean at a U.S Law School at Howard University. After serving as a corporate attorney, President Carter named Patricia Harris as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, leaving her to be the first African American woman to serve as a cabinet secretary.
