Thailand Medical Patients Resort to the Black Market

Medical cannabis has been legal in Thailand since 2018. But the concentration they allow is so low that people are resorting to the black market.

Although Thailand is the first Southeast Asian nation to legalize cannabis medically, it still has some of the most restrictive laws.

Cannabis oil in Thailand is offered for free at state-run hospitals for those eligible for government universal health care. It’s prescribed for multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, nausea, and vomiting from chemotherapy, as well as, more minor conditions like stress.

However, the max THC concentration allowed for the oil is only .2%.

This is clearly not enough for some patients who need stronger doses. For comparison, medical shops in the US sell up to 15%. As such, these patients have gone to the black market to get much higher concentrations.

Although to some patients this is their only option, there are also some risks associated with that since they are entering into an unregulated market.

However, these patients continue to argue that their lives depend on this as some are using it to treat conditions like seizures. The longer the seizure episode, the more damage that’s done to the brain and elsewhere. This is where cannabis has time and time again proven to treat seizure episodes and other serious health conditions.

It’s imperative that Thailand reconsider its laws considering they have every intention of entering the global market which is projected to reach $48 billion by 2027.
