Maurice Ashley

On March 15, 1993, Maurice Ashley became the first African American chess player to attain the rank of International Grand Master. Ashley was born in Jamaica but immigrated to America at the age of 12 with his family. He began playing chess at the age of 14. By the age of 20, he became a national master and later the Internationational Grand Master.
